Early Life and Education

Dr. K. A. T. W. Perera Jayawardene, a name synonymous with Sri Lankan anesthesiology, began his journey at St. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia, and Ananda College, Colombo. His academic pursuits led him to the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, where he earned his MBBS degree in 1956.

Early Career and Specialization

Following his internship at Kalutara Hospital, Dr. Jayawardene embarked on a path of specialization. He obtained a Diploma in Anesthesia in 1962 and the prestigious FFARCS (UK) in 1963. His early career involved serving as a Consultant Anesthesiologist in Badulla and Kurunegala.

A Pioneer in Intensive Care

In 1965, Dr. Jayawardene joined the Cardio-Thoracic Unit at the General Hospital, Colombo. This marked a turning point in his career as he delved into the field of cardio-thoracic anesthesia and critical care. His dedication to patient care and his innovative spirit led him to establish Sri Lanka’s first intensive care unit in 1968.

A Distinguished Career and Legacy

Dr. Jayawardene’s contributions to the field of anesthesiology and intensive care were recognized both nationally and internationally. He held numerous prestigious positions, including:

  • Fellow of the American College of Cardiology
  • Vice President of the Sri Lanka Heart Association
  • Honorary Fellow of the College of Physicians and General Practitioners
  • President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (1991)

 

He also served as a Consultant Anesthesiologist to the Sri Lanka Air Force and played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM).

A Lasting Impact

Dr. Jayawardene’s legacy extends beyond his numerous achievements. The Thistle Jayawardena Oration, an annual event honoring outstanding contributions to intensive care in Sri Lanka, is a testament to his enduring impact.

His passion for teaching and research inspired countless students and colleagues. His dedication to patient care and his pioneering spirit continue to shape the practice of anesthesiology and intensive care in Sri Lanka.
